Análise comparativa entre tipos de alimentação de Micrurus corallinus (Serpentes, Elapidae) em cativeiro Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Serapicos,Eliana de Oliveira; Merusse,José Luiz Bernardino.
Micrurus corallinus (Merrem, 1820) kept in laboratory animal rooms swallow voluntarily various colubrid species. The most accepted species belong to the genera Sibynomorphus Fitzinger, 1843, Oxyrhopus Wagler, 1830 and Liophis Wagler, 1830. The voluntary feeding guaranteed resistance against pathogenic agents. The forced feeding was unsatisfactory due to stress resulting from handling, feeding frequency (30 days), susceptibility to pathogenic agents and high occurrence of pathologies.

Anxiogenic-like effect of acute and chronic fluoxetine on rats tested on the elevated plus-maze BJMBR
Silva,M.T.A.; Alves,C.R.R.; Santarem,E.M.M..
The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine (FLX) is widely prescribed for depression and anxiety-related disorders. On the other hand, enhanced serotonergic transmission is known to be classically related to anxiety. In this study, the effects of acute (5.0 mg/kg) and chronic (5.0 mg/kg, 22 days) FLX were investigated in both food-deprived and non-deprived rats tested in the elevated plus-maze. Significant main effects of the three factors (drug, food condition and administration regimen) were observed, but no interaction between them. The administration of either acute or chronic FLX resulted in an anxiogenic effect, as detected by a significant reduction in the percentage of time spent in the open arms and in the percentage of open arm...

Ribeiro,Paula A.P.; Miranda-Filho,Kleber C.; Melo,Daniela C. de; Luz,Ronald K..
In aquaculture, activities with anesthetic compounds are usually used in order to ensure the welfare of farmed fish, allowing handling out of water with decreased trauma by stress. Presently, there is no information about anesthetic action of eugenol in early life stages of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The objective of this study was to evaluate different concentrations of eugenol for larvae and juveniles of Nile tilapia. Sixty animals were used for each group of weight, group I = 0.02 g; group II = 0.08 g; group III = 0.22 g; group IV = 2.62 g; and group V = 11.64 g. The eugenol concentrations tested were 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg L-1. No mortality was reported during the tests with eugenol. Tilapia larvae with 0.02 g and juveniles around...

Evaluation of the Technical and Economical Effects of the Using of Machinery System for Processing of Straw for Energy Purposes CIGR Journal
Nozdrovicky, Ladislav.
In conditions of the agriculture in Slovak republic the straw, obtained as a by-product from cereals cropping systems, has a growing potential to be used as an important renewable energy source. This trend is fully consistent with the energy policy of the European Union, which aims to reduce the negative environmental impacts of fossil fuel use. The aim of the presented paper was to evaluate technical and economic effects of the using of the system for processing of straw including straw baling, transport and handling of the straw bales. During the years 2010-2012 the field experiments have been conducted in conditions of the large-scale farm (2770 ha of arable land). For the straw baling, transport and handling of the straw bales there is used a machinery...

Handling of female pacas (Agouti paca, Linnaeus, 1766) for ultrasound pregnancy detection Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Oliveira,Fabrício Singaretti de; Machado,Márcia Rita Fernandes; Canola,Júlio Carlos.
The paca is a South American rodent whose handling, tranquilization or anesthesia offers a large field of research due to rare existing issues. Twelve adult female pacas were used, separated in 6 pen, and were caught with a net made of polypropylene attached to a wire loop and then sent to a room where the abdominal hair clipping was done. Afterwards, the female was placed in an iron bar squeeze cage. The ultrasonography session was made in B mode with a two-frequency sectorial electronic transducer of 5.0 and 7.5 MHz. Intending to reduce the stress caused by the procedures, the tranquilization of females was made with oral taking of diazepam and midazolam maleate. Both presented effectiveness in tranquilization of pacas previously and during sessions,...

POST-HARVEST QUALITY OF PEQUI (Caryocar brasiliense CAMB.) COLLECTED FROM THE PLANT OR AFTER NATURALLY FALLING OFF AND SUBJECTED TO SLOW AND QUICK FREEZING Rev. Bras. Frutic.
OLIVEIRA,MARIA NEUDES SOUSA; LOPES,PAULO SÉRGIO MASCIMENTO; MERCADANTE-SIMÕES,MARIA OLÍVIA; PEREIRA,EDUARDO GUSMÃO; RIBEIRO,LEONARDO MONTEIRO.
ABSTRACT Soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, pH, moisture, soluble sugars (SSU), total reducing sugars (RSU), and non-reducing sugars (NRS) were assessed in the pulp of pequi fruits collected at three ripening stages: from the plant, from the ground after naturally falling off, and collected from the ground three days after naturally falling off. The evaluation was performed after six months of freezer storage both for fruits subjected to quick freezing (liquid nitrogen followed by freezer) and slow freezing (straight into the freezer). The variables assessed were not influenced by the freezing method. The SS, TA, and RSU contents increased with the ripening stage, suggesting that the fruits collected from the plant are still...
